Frequently asked questions
Where can I buy authentic Greek olive oil?
Buy from specialist olive shops and producers that list the region, harvest date and producer on the label. Our olive directory lists shops with addresses, phone numbers and directions, and the olive map shows them all in one place.
What makes Kalamata olives different?
Kalamata olives are a PDO variety from Messinia in the Peloponnese. They are almond-shaped, deep purple and fruity, and traditionally cured in brine with red wine vinegar. Read our Kalamata olives guide.
How do I tell if olive oil is real extra virgin?
Look for a recent harvest date, dark glass or tins, acidity under 0.8% and a PDO or PGI label naming the region. Our guide to spotting fake olive oil explains the checks.
Is listing my olive shop free?
Yes. Olive shops, farms, mills and olive oil brands can be listed for free. Send us your details and we add you to the directory and the map.
Which Greek regions are best for olives?
Crete and the Peloponnese (including Kalamata and Laconia) produce most of Greece's olive oil, with Koroneiki the main variety. Halkidiki is known for large green table olives, and Lesvos for mild, fruity oils.
