About Toplou Monastery Estate
Toplou is a fortified monastery dating from the 14th century, near Sitia in north-east Crete. Alongside its religious life, the monastery farms olives and vines, and according to the Wines of Crete listing its extra virgin olive oil comes from organic farming.
Guided tours and tastings of olive oil, wine and tsikoudia, served with local meze, run daily from April to October. The site also includes a museum of Byzantine icons, so a visit can combine the history of the monastery with its farm produce. Visitors outside that season should check arrangements before travelling.
