About Vrana Olive Press Museum
In Papados, in the Gera area of Lesvos, Nikolaos Vranas opened a steam-powered olive press in 1887. He was the grandfather of the Nobel poet Odysseas Elytis, and the press ran until 1978. The non-profit Archipelagos Society restored it and opened it as a museum in 2009, and the machinery includes a working Tangye engine made in Birmingham.
Visitors report a small shop selling award-winning Lesvos olive oils and a tasting area. Opening hours vary, so call ahead before making the trip. It pairs well with the industrial olive oil museum at Agia Paraskevi for anyone tracing the island's olive history.
