About Museum of the Olive and Greek Olive Oil
Part of the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation museum network, this museum at 129 Othonos-Amalias in Sparta traces olive cultivation and oil production in Greece from prehistory to the early 20th century. Exhibits include fossilised olive leaves from Santorini, replicas of ancient and Byzantine presses and a section on traditional soap-making.
The museum is open daily except Tuesdays, from 10:00 to 18:00 between March and mid-October and from 10:00 to 17:00 in winter. Its shop sells items inspired by the collection and the Foundation's publications. It gives useful background before visiting working mills in Laconia, such as Sparta Gourmet south of town.
